Happy Dachstag (Badger Day)!

Discussion:

We are reporting live from the Lathrop State Park Visitor Centre (photo) 167 miles south of Denver Colorado, where we are eagerly anticipating the emergence of "Bartholomew Badger" (photo) from his den, and his prognostication of how many weeks of winter are still ahead of us.  We set out on this road trip after reading Arie's "Groundhog Day" comment yesterday.

It is a common misconception that the groundhog is the premier winter forecaster, when in fact it is the BADGER!  Look up "Groundhog Day" on Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog_Day) or see the extract below.

The badger (German "dachs") is also the source of the word "dachshund". Dachshunds were bred in Europe to hunt and flush out badgers from their den. See Wikipedia for more details.

Move over Superbowl - The Weather Network has live coverage of Balzac Billy's emergence. Will he see his shadow? Or will spring come early? It's a nail-biter...

In Britain, the Jack Russel was the preferred dog of choice for badger hunting. Mean and strong with no fear, and the added benefit of no big floppy ears to get bitten by the ground hugging badger. Regardless, if either dog is in the vicinity on Groundhog Day, results may be skewed.

We lost our Internet connectivity for most of the day, so we're only filing our report now. Bartholomew emerged from his den at 0817, moved to his usual perch in the Lathrop State Park Visitor Centre, and SAW HIS SHADOW! See photo where his shadow is clearly visible. Although this photo bears some resemblance to the photo we included in our post, the latter is from 2023, while this one was taken this morning.

So 6 MORE WEEKS OF WINTER!
