Wow. They must have seen that hole in the door and thought it looked like a good den. In all the years I've been in that area, winter and summer, I've never seen badgers. (End of day edit: Next time I'll wait until I'm fully awake before commenting. Good one, though)

The paw prints were a dead giveaway ... badgers are members of the weasel family and have 5 toes. The canid family have 4. They must have been badgers masquerading as coyotes!
