I followed up on Dave P’s Dec 16th Shadow Lake trip report (thanks, Dave).

Decided to veer off & check out the Redearth Creek Warden’s Cabin and left a visit to Shadow lake Lodge for another day. The Warden’s Cabin is a great example of the original architecture used by Banff National Park. It was built in 1910 and is one of the oldest cabins in the park.

What a pleasure to meet Chris and Karl today. You can tell from talking with them that they have a great love for the outdoors. Other than the ACC snowmobile groomer team, they were the only other ones on the trail.

The grooming team had plans to make 2 passes to pack the trail. The intention is to trackset after the next snowfall, perhaps even before Christmas. I measured 23 cm of fresh snow at one of the bridges.

Earlier, the team had been hard at work clearing some deadfall from the trail. Several indications of recent chainsaw activity. Thanks groomers!

Gentle reminder: there are 2 avalanche chutes on the way to Shadow Lake.

As I arrived, the trail was snowmobile packed and skier trackset

First avalanche chute coming up

I think JoLynn should consider making a watercolor picture of this...

So nice to meet Chris and Karl today.

So glad you made it to what is known locally as the “Chapel in the Pines”.
Maybe worth exploring further!

Now that you mention it, it does look kind of chapel-like.

Wonder if my old round thermometer is still hanging there at the Chapel of the Bells? It was still there last year....? If one decided to ski there this Christmas, they would get the perfect viewing of the December full moon!

Good info helen. A nice opportunity if not too cloudy (forecast doesn’t look promising so far).
