Discussion:

Headed up toward Skogan Pass today on light touring metal-edged skis. Mixed sun and cloud with scattered flurries. Temperature about -4C at the Nakiska parking lot and -7C at the top intersection with Skogan Loop where we turned around. On the way back down, we took High Level to the Lookout, and down Sunburst. We broke trail with a ski penetration of 5cm at the bottom, increasing to about 20cm at the top. The first challenge of the day was bypassing the fencing around the Terrain Park on the north side of the Bronze Chair. Instead of following Hidden Trail, I'd recommend skiing down to the base of the Bronze Chair (see photo).

Total distance: 16.00 Km

To get around the Terrain Park fencing (behind the chair), ski down to the base of the Bronze Chair

The snowpack for the first 2km of the Skogan Pass Trail was 5-10cm of snow over an ice crust base. There were 4 fallen trees on the trail that we managed to pull out of the way (see photo).

Moving trees off the trail

Conditions greatly improved over the next km to the Sunburst junction, 10-15cm of snow over a hardpack snow base. We followed an alpine ski touring track (looked like two skiers from yesterday) that joined the Skogan Pass Trail via the Troll Falls / Marmot Creek hiking trail. At the Sunburst junction the ski tracks headed up Sunburst, while we continued on the Skogan Pass Trail as far as the upper Skogan Loop junction. 15-20cm trail-breaking on this section. We decided to turn around here, skied down to the High Level junction, and then broke trail up High Level to the Lookout (see photos).

(Not much of a) view from the Lookout

The Lookout cabin

20-25cm snow on the Lookout picnic table

A great day with better than expected weather!

There are ski cross races this weekend(Sat-Sun), so DO NOT duck the big fences on Bronze!
