Just over 2’ of snow at the pass in open areas. Between a foot or two in the forest above. Almost 3’ up at the top of the cut block. Usually east elk has at least double that amount of snow by now. Worth checking out though, if not just for the out and back on a nice day, or throw in the traverse. You’ll get a sense of it as you travel to east elk. Doesn’t seem like the year for it so far.

Thanks MaSid, I'll give it a bit more thought.

You’d get 2 km beyond pass easily as its meadow travel. It’s a 1000 ft descent to the road from the pass, and south facing. If it’s anything like travel through the drainage corridor on the way to the pass it’ll be thin in the trees. Depends how much deadfall etc. For example, going up the boundary cut line to the top of the hill would be challenging with LT gear and wax without skins right now. Switchbacking through the forest would be a bit bony with the low snow and deadfall/brush to deal with.

MaSid - Any idea what snowpack conditions are like S of E Elk Pass, heading down the Tobermory Creek drainage? Thinking of making an attempt to get to Tobermory Cabin, or at least setting a track partway for later.

Who am I to disagree. 🎵

East elk to west elk traverse again. Great day for it. -16 in the parking lot at 830 and -2 on return at 230. A cold brisk wind for most of the day, keeping the snow cool with the intense sun. Luckily it died down a bit for my visit at the viewpoint. The east elk track is good and solid, as is west elk pass. 4-6” of dust on crust in the cut block descent.

The approach to Patterson meadows.

East elk pass at its finest.

Bobcat?

They know a good track when they see one.

Clear BC views at AB rates.

And a large cougar was around also. Fresh! Actually walked down a set of ski turns through the cut block, possibly that morning.
