You were right on the money Ulrikeski about your prediction of some hard packed, wind blown snow on the way into Skoki, so your choice of Shadow Lake instead was definitely the right one in terms of more forgiving snow conditions.

Chinook wind blowing on the highway, -3C start at trailhead and surprise - new tracksetting. Fast glide on firm tracks in dry snow; there was an ice flow on the climb after the campground, but easy to detour on the left. Climbing the hill was good on the grippy snow, but beware of rocks on the side. Sunny and quiet at the lodge, wind picked up crossing the lake. Met a young skier on race skis returning from the peninsula. I crossed to the end of the lake for a close up view of Mt. Ball's frozen waterfalls. Sun hid behind clouds at the red chairs, so I had a short lunch. The ski out was somewhat bumpy along the narrow trail, then a fast cruise. The last bridge has a jump, if you want to get air!

nice tracks starting out

rocks on the steep corner
