Discussion:

The Cascade River trail has excellent base snow with about 7 to 9 cm of recent new snow in the tracksets. The tracksets are getting somewhat worn but are still useable. Some areas are skier tracked as people did not follow the trackset after the last snow storm. Snow in the tracksets was fairly fast but only moderate speed in the skier tracks. It would be a good time for Parks Canada to re-trackset the trail.

Beyond Stoney Creek I rebroke my trail from a couple of weeks back. Trail breaking off the old trail was fairly easy-moderate difficulty. On average there was about ankle deep ski penetration. I skied roughly 2.5 to 3 km beyond Elk Trap. The last few hundred meters of my trail breaking the ski penetration became about boot top deep once I turned onto a different aspect past the avalanche slope. This is where the trail breaking became moderately difficult. I skied up valley until it became dark.

As I was skiing back towards Elk Trap I was entertained by night howling wolves about 750 meters up the hillside to the northeast. They must have been intrigued by my headlamp.

At the Stoney Creek Warden Cabin it was -4c at around 9pm.
